Krinos Olive Center

Perrotis Krinos Olive Center building on the tradition of olive cultivation at the School and its place in the academic and practical training aspects of education at all levels, was established in 2013 to address the needs and promote the success of the olive and olive oil production sector in Greece. A long-term research, educational and demonstration olive grove was established in 2011, for the evaluation of the new super-high & high density planting systems, adapted for mechanical harvesting.

The Krinos Olive Center building, which was officially inaugurated on December 2nd, 2015 trough a gift of the Moscahlaides Foundation, includes a small scale olive oil cold extraction unit, storage, processing unit, oil analyses and sensory evaluation of olives and olive oil, equipment and a modern classroom for special seminars and teaching.

The Center Director Dr. Athanasios Gertsis, author of multi-year research projects in the high density olive cultivation systems adapted to mechanical harvesting and the innovative use of olive by-products, sees the Krinos Olive Center as an opportunity to “apply an holistic and sustainable approach to table olives olive oil production. It includes evaluating low input production systems and the carbon and water footprints of the olive life  cycle and disseminating information to the producers  and consumers. The KOC could be an innovation mediator for olives in Greek agriculture”.

The Center aims to establish a forum of olive growers interested on new and sustainable production methods, including consumers, researchers , students and business sector people as well as to provide consulting services in entrepreneurship and export marketing to Greek olive producers and businesses.

A Memorandum of Collaboration with the UC Davis Olive Center at the University of California at Davis has been signed for joint full spectrum research and teaching activities, from cultivation to processing, marketing and by-product applications.

The Center organizes workshops during the mechanical harvesting season on an annual basis.
