The global pandemic has affected many spheres of activity around the world but perhaps no realm has been as affected as has international travel. With study abroad programs grounded around the world, the Perrotis College Study Abroad office had to come up with ways to keep lines of communication open with its partner institutions in the U.S. while also finding innovative ways to offer a Perrotis educational experience to its American audience.
From these challenges, the video series titled, “A Taste of Perrotis College,” was born. Six short films were created, highlighting different aspects of the Perrotis College Study Abroad experience. The Study Abroad team introduces the program, gives a tour of the campus, and explains elements of Greek culture like "philotimo". Short lectures given by Drs Kampouridis, Vasilikiotis and Zinoviadou were filmed, providing viewers a sample of our faculty areas of expertise. Katerina Stamatika and US fellow Kate Dietrich-Manion provided a Greek cooking lesson, highlighting gastronomic and cultural aspects of Greece, and Student Services staff introduces viewers to their favorite spots in Thessaloniki through a mini city tour. The videos have been sent to many partners in the U.S., to students, and are available for viewing on the Perrotis College YouTube channel.
The video series also serves as an introduction to a new program offered by study abroad: Online Lectures. This program gives U.S. faculty an opportunity to host online guest lectures from a Perrotis faculty member, allowing students to gain an international perspective into their subject area, while also showcasing the expertise of Perrotis faculty.
With the future of international travel unknown, it is collaborations of faculty and staff like these that will help bridge the gaps left by the global pandemic.
