Perrotis College, in collaboration with the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens and the European Community of Practice for Bio-economy Education, organized the 2nd Summer School on Circular Bio-economy, which was held entirely online and free of charge in September 2020.
The objective of the summer school was to train a new generation of experts and managers from a wide range of educational backgrounds in the field of Circular Bio- economy. The 38 young participants were selected from across Europe and countries in Africa and Asia.
The school highlighted the potential and particularities of the Mediterranean Basin, which was chosen as this year's target region. The participants had the opportunity to familiarize with current trends of Bio-economy and the introduction to new aspects and perspectives. There was also a practical component, where students developed a case study on a given issue proposed by the organizing committee. Perrotis College faculty made presentations and assisted participants in developing their case studies. Dean Dr. Athanasios Tsaftaris gave a presentation titled “Metagenomics of environmental and food microbiota: applications towards sustainable circular bio-economy “. Dr. Kiki Zinoviadou gave presentations on the “Application of the 5R's in the food sector (Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, Repurpose, Recycle)” and on “Biodegradable packaging”. Dr. Christos Vasilikiotis developed and presented two videos on “Climate smart farming- No-Till & Cover crops” and on “Agricultural Waste Management & Bioeconomy”, while Dr. Athanasios Gertsis developed and presented two videos with the titles “Can Unmanned Aerial vehicles (UAV) by used in the cycle of bioeconomy” and on “Olive pruning bio-recycling: a case study in the Olive grove”.
